Why Is Your Freezer Coated In A Layer Of Ice?

If your freezer is getting too cold, it's going to put a thick layer of ice all over the sides of the freezer. This can cause a problem for the freezer side and the refrigerator side as well. If your freezer is frozen, it could be freezer burning your food. This can ruin a lot of food you have stored in there. If your refrigerator is also freezing, the food inside is also going to be at risk of getting ruined. Read on for reasons why this may be occurring and what you can do about it.

The Thermostat Is Set Too Cold

The thermostat may be set to the coldest setting on both the freezer and refrigerator side. If they are too cold, try adjusting the thermostat to see if this helps. You may need to thaw out your freezer to get rid of the ice that has accumulated in your freezer. You can remove all of your food from both the freezer and refrigerator side, placing it all in coolers, then open up the doors to your freezer/refrigerator and turn it off to thaw it all out. Keep a mop and some rags handy to clean up. Turn your freezer/refrigerator back on and adjust the setting to cold and keep an eye on it to see if it freezes up again.

The Thermostat Is Broken

If adjusting the thermostat didn't do anything at all, the problem may be with the thermostat itself. If the thermostat is broken, you're going to need a new one. Call a local appliance parts dealer to see if you can find the thermostat for your freezer/refrigerator. Remove the old thermostat and replace it with the new one. If you aren't sure how to do this, you should leave this work to an appliance repairman.

Your Freezer Is Too Full

If your thermostat wasn't the problem at all, your freezer may be jammed with too much food that it is causing problems with the flow of air inside your freezer. Make sure you don't have anything blocking the vents inside your freezer. Remove food that is outdated or that you no longer want, then check back on your freezer to see if it's working properly.

If your freezer is coated in ice, it won't be long before your refrigerator side is also affected. Use the information above to help you repair the problem, or call a refrigerator repair specialist for help with this issue.
