Basic Troubleshooting Tips For Ovens

Although your oven might seem indestructible, it can have the occasional breakdown. When it does, basic troubleshooting could possibly save the day. Here are some of the common oven problems and steps you can take to possibly fix them.

Oven Door Will Not Shut

When the oven door will not shut, escaping heat from it will make it difficult to safely cook food. In most instances, the problem is the hinge on the door. To repair it, dissemble your oven door and replace the broken hinge with a new one.

Depending on the design of the oven, you might have to remove its side panel to dissemble the door. If that is the case, the hinge is mounted to the cavity of the oven.

Oven Does Not Work

When your oven refuses to turn on at all, the problem might be a tripped circuit. If you have other appliances or electronics plugged in on the same circuit as the oven, it is easy for it to experience an overload and turn off as a safety measure.

You can turn the oven on by finding its breaker in the electrical panel in your home and flipping its breaker to the "On" position. It is a good idea to assess what is plugged into the circuit before flipping the breaker. If the circuit is overloaded once the oven is restarted, the circuit will trip again.

The Light Does Not Turn On

If the light is out on your oven, chances are you just need to replace the bulb. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct bulb to purchase.

If the problem persists, it is possible that the light switch is faulty. Replacing a faulty light switch requires technical skill and should be completed by a professional repair technician.

Oven Temperature Is Inaccurate

When the temperature in the oven is inaccurate, cooking can be complicated. In some instances, the problem is a matter of circulation. In order for the heat to be distributed properly, there needs to be good circulation.

The door to your oven is a gateway for air to enter the cavity of the oven. As the temperature increases inside the oven, the air is propelled upwards and out through a vent. The process repeats itself and allows for the constant circulation of heated air through the cavity of the oven.

If the vent is obstructed, the air flow is interrupted and the temperature does not reach its potential. To resolve this, check the oven vent to ensure that it is free from obstructions. The vent is usually located under one of the stovetop's rear elements. If there is a pot or pan over that element, move it.
